911: Call if You Can, Text if You Can’t
While voice calls to 911 are still the best and fastest way to contact 911, cell phone users will be able to send a text to 911 in an emergency
- Accessibility: Text-to-911 began Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 throughout Rock Island County, IL, and Scott County, IA. Texting can be the first contact option for individuals who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, or those with speech impairments.
- Safety: Text-to-911 should only be used when a person can’t safely make a voice call. It is a discreet way to report domestic violence, home invasions, human trafficking, and suicidal individuals.
- How to Use: To text 911, enter the numbers 911 in the “To” field, text your exact location and type of emergency, send the message, and promptly answer questions and follow instructions.
