Proper Property Maintenance

In order to protect the health, safety and welfare, and to improve and preserve our neighborhoods, the Village of Milan has adopted by ordinance, minimum property maintenance standards. Doing so will help ensure that the Village of Milan continues to be a nice place to live.

Minimum Exterior Property Maintenance:

Weeds, grass and other vegetation

  • Weeds and grass shall not exceed 10 inches in height.
  • No shrubbery or other vegetation shall obstruct movement or vision on street or sidewalks.
  • Maintenance of vegetation on Public Right-of-Way and boulevards shall be the responsibility of the adjacent property owner/occupant.

Yards, boulevards, Public Right-of-Way and Ravines

  • Yards must be kept in a clean, safe and sanitary condition free of litter, junk, tires, appliances, rubbish, windblown debris, garbage, fecal matter, or infestation.
  • Garbage containers may be kept at the curb 24-hours prior to and including the collection day only.
  • There shall be no accumulation of dirt, sand, snow/ice, or other debris on streets or sidewalks.
  • Sidewalks, driveways, parking spaces, stairs, and similar areas shall be kept in a proper state of repair, and free from hazardous conditions.
  • Parking and/or storage of vehicles, trailers, boats, and other recreational vehicles must be on an improved surface such as concrete or asphalt, and not in the yard or lawn.

Minimum Exterior Structure Maintenance:

All structures including homes, apartment buildings, sheds, garages, stairways, decks, porches and balconies.

  • Property address shall be identified with numbers a minimum of 4 inches high with a minimum stoke width of ½ inches. The address shall be legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property, and contrast with the structure. 
  • All structures shall be maintained in good repair and condition, weather resistant and water tight.
  • All wood or metal surfaces must be protected with paint or stain.
  • All siding must be kept in good repair and condition with no peeling paint or missing pieces. Fascia, soffit, and gutters must be maintained and in good repair. 
  • Chimneys shall be maintained structurally safe and sound and in good repair
