Milan Launches Lead Service Line Replacement InitiativeĀ

The Village of Milan is taking proactive steps to protect public health by launching a comprehensive program to inventory and replace lead service lines throughout the community. These are the individual service lines that connect the Village's water mains to homes and businesses. This initiative is in compliance with the U.S. EPA's Lead and Copper Rule and Illinois' Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act.

Why Replace Lead Service Lines?

While Milan's drinking water meets all federal quality standards, lead is a naturally occurring metal that can be harmful if inhaled or swallowed. Lead exposure can cause a variety of adverse health effects, especially in children. Lead service lines, which connect homes and businesses to the public water main, may have been installed prior to the 1986 federal ban on lead pipes. These individual service lines are owned by the property owner, not the Village.

Take the Lead Service Line Survey

To kick off the replacement program, the Village is conducting a survey to identify properties that may have lead service lines. All residents and property owners are urged to complete this important survey by June 15, 2024.

The survey can be accessed:

  • Online at Lead Service Line Survey
  • By scanning the QR code from this web site, or in the letter you receive from Mayor Dawson
  • By paper copies to be included with your next water bill, and also available at Village Hall

Free Lead Service Line Replacements

The good news is that replacement of any lead service lines will not be any additional cost to the resident or property owner. The Village will pay for replacement with much of the funding expected to be covered by available state and federal grant funding. This ambitious replacement initiative will be a multi-year process. "Protecting the health and safety of our residents is our top priority," said Mayor Dawson. "By proactively inventorying and replacing lead service lines, we are taking an important step to ensure clean drinking water for generations to come."

Need Assistance?

If you need help inspecting your service line pipes or completing the survey, refer to the "Pipe Identification Procedures" document provided by the Village or call 309-787-8414. The Village appreciates all residents and property owners taking the time to participate in this critical public health initiative.
